Dihedral Symmetry

In dihedral symmetry "the lines of reflection intersect at a central point of rotation." (David Wade) It may also be thought of as a combination of rotational and bilateral symmetry. Most of my square mandalas are dihedral.

Unpainted Pictures

When Emil Nolde was forbidden to paint by the Nazis in Germany during WWII he painted a series of watercolors that he called Unpainted Pictures. They are brilliant little images that he managed to keep hidden from his persecutors from 1938 – 1945 when the war ended. I have not been expressly forbidden to paint -- however our culture has a thousand ways to discourage art. I feel cautious about bringing any work out into the light.

The more exposure you have to real art, the more you see that there is a mysterious communalism. -- Brice Marden

"Symmetry principles are characterized by a quietude, a stillness that is somehow beyond the bustling world; yet, in one way or another, they are almost always involved with transformation, disturbance, or movement." - David Wade Symmetry, the Ordering Principle
